How hiring a Data Science student for a paid placement will be good for your business.
The DDI Skills Gateway has been set up as part of the wider Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal Data-Driven Innovation initiative so that the whole population in the region can benefit from the opportunities of the new data driven economy. It creates the potential for everyone to sharpen their data skills and exploit their digital talents.
That includes girls who might be put off by the often male-dominated image of the technology sector, mature students, those reskilling and upskilling for future jobs.

One of the Skills Gateway initiatives is the sourcing of employer-led student placements in data science for undergraduate students across the Edinburgh and South East Scotland Region City Deal. This work is being undertaken by Edinburgh Napier University in partnership with ScotlandIS under the banner of “Data Placements”. We promote placements to college and university students so you can start building your future data-skilled workforce.
Data Placements are tasked with sourcing paid internship/ placement opportunities with a specific focus on ensuring that we develop data professionals from the most diverse groups.
Demand for data skills in Scottish technology firms has increased 20% in the last year. By taking on one of these student placements, you can obtain these skills and add value to your business on a flexible, short-term basis, and shape the future of your organisation. Students can work full-time over the summer, or part-time throughout the year. We also have students who can work for a full year on longer term projects that can harness the value of your data.
Our students are skilled in disciplines from data science to software development, mobile apps to AI, and everything in-between. Almost 50% of companies in Scotland identify data analytics and AI/ML technologies as areas where they need additional skills to grow their business - all examples of where a student placement can help to fill this gap.
What’s more the service is free. All we ask is that your student placement pays at least national living wage.
We advertise, act as the recruitment agent and sift CVs, can arrange interviews and make the process as easy for you as possible.
